Virtual Private Networks, or VPNs are the next move forwards in allowing "home-working" to become a reality.
 
In essence, a VPN is a secure tunnel established over the Internet that encapsulates (encrypts) all the traffic sent from a home user to their corporate network.
 
This ensures that only authenticated users can connect to their workplace and access the corporate network as if they were in the office.
 
This has opened up the market for IT Support companies like Dee I.T. to be able to offer a substantial discount in the cost of Support Contracts due to the reduced requirement of on-site visits required for the day-to-day administration.
 
For example, if a new person joins a company, then all the User Accounts, Email Addresses and Home Directories can be created remotely by an authorised user, negating the requirement for an on-site visit unless requested by the customer.
 
There are now key components in Windows XP that allow a user to remotely connect to their PC in the office as if they were sitting in front of it e.g. Remote Desktop Connection and Remote Assistance.
 
Remote Desktop Connection is designed for general day-to-day usage of the individual's PC whereas Remote Assistance allows another individual to request assistance from a friend or colleague and can then interact with each other over a shared screen.  This is useful for showing a new user how to complete certain tasks for example.
 
The only downside to consider with a VPN is the speed.  Whereas a normal network connection is 100Mbs, a VPN connection will only ever be as fast as the individual's broadband connection (Currently at around 2Mbps).
 
This will improve over the coming years and probably by 2008 will allow users to connect at approximately 50Mbs.
